A spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) told ABC News in a statement on Wednesday that the agency “continues to support the community’s efforts to treat measles outbreaks. CDCs continue to provide technical assistance, laboratory support and vaccines as requested.”
“The risk of measles infection is low for the general population of the United States, with a case of less than 0.4 per 100,000 people, lower than countries developed by peers, including Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Italy,” the statement continued. “The risk of measles is higher in American communities with low vaccination rates in areas with active measles outbreaks or with social and/or geographical links close to areas with active measles outbreaks.”
According to CDCs, there have been at least 27 outbreaks this year, representing 88% of confirmed cases. In comparison, 16 outbreaks were recorded in 2024.
Texas experienced a great outbreak this year, with 753 cases reported since January. The propagation rate has slowed down in recent weeks, with few cases reported.
At least two school -age children have died. Both were not vaccinated and did not know underlying conditions, according to Texas health officials.
A third death was recorded in measles in New Mexico between a non -vaccinated adult who tested positive after dying, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.
CDC currently recommended That people receive two doses of MMR vaccine, the first 12 to 15 months of age and the second between 4 and 6 years. A dose is 93% effective, and two doses are 97% effective, says CDC.
The measles was declared eliminated from the United States In 2000 due to a highly effective vaccination program, according to CDC. However, CDC data shows that vaccination rates have been lagging behind in recent years.
The infant garden rate that received vaccines required by the State fell 95% during the 2019-2020 school year to less than 93% During the 2023-2024 school year.
Around 280,000 US Infants Gardens, or 7.3%, are not completely vaccinated with the two -dose measles vaccine.
The immunity of the flock, which is when enough people are immune to a disease that cannot spread from person to person, is generally reached when more than 95% of people in a community are vaccinated.
The HHS spokesman said that CDCs “continue to recommend MMR vaccines as the best way to protect against measles,” but also said that the decision to receive the vaccine is “personal.”
“People should consult with their medical care provider to understand their options to inoculate and should be informed about the potential risks and benefits associated with the vaccine,” said the spokesman.
